The history of the checkered pattern

The checkered pattern has its origins dating back to ancient civilizations such as Greece and Rome. It was traditionally used in textiles, such as on clothing and blankets, and was associated with wealth and nobility. The pattern continued to be popular throughout the Middle Ages, and was used in everything from clothing to floor tiling.

The resurgence of the checkered pattern in interior design

Today, checks are resurging as a choice in flooring, also furniture and accessories - the list goes on. The pattern is popular in modern and minimalistic interiors, where it adds a touch of visual interest and personality. It's also being used for a traditional result, where we call for nostalgia and warmth .

Our studio likes pairing it with bold colors and unexpected materials. For example, pairing a black and white checkered pattern with a bright pink or frosty green can create a visually interesting and unexpected effect. See below for a lovely result at the ever elegant Prada environs.

When we use patterns like check, we feel it's important to consider the overall design scheme and the scale of the room. In smaller rooms, we apply small doses, such as on a throw pillow or a piece of artwork. In larger rooms, we can use the pattern on larger surfaces such as a floor, wall or more.
