What is Modern Boho?

Modern BoHo? Really?

Yes, really. It’s a thing and the look is pretty scorchy hot right now.

If Modern Boho is indeed what you’re after, we can share a few items that STUDIO 1NINE1 uses to nail the vibe. Go forth and discover how to DIY your space into Modern BoHo heaven.

Traditional Boho combines rattans and cane with textiles and soft yarny surfaces. In updating, we include other finishes such as chrome, lacquer, wood with colours on a tigher rotation. With this look you can also consider some dark and moody hues when compared to the kaleidescope of bright in a folksy Boho traditional pallette.

LIGHTING

Look for airy pendants that are in weaves or shaded with natural fibres. Alternatively, go for ultra modern lighting and pair with a playful texture, pattern or colours in the room to nail that juxtaposition.

TEXTURES

Picking up from finishes, we want to combine contrasting ideas when we think modern and boho. Take a folky quilt with a bold pattern and pair with smooth and sleek caramel leather OR a faux hide area rug crowned with some luxy boucle seating can nail this as well.

ART/ACCENTS

When it comes to art, you’ve got a lot of options here. One way to do it is to leave art until last and look around the space, assess how you can balance what’s going on with the furniture, walls, lighting, rugs/accessories through the art. If there’s no wallpaper, and minimal textures and layers going on, add something 3D like a woven wall hanging. A move like this screams sophisticated, with a Boho heart:). Other idea to pursue are patterns paired with smooth terra cotta/ pottery and always include plants (live or dry), wherever possible. The rooting in the earth is a big part of evoking a Modern Boho vibe.

That’s it. That’s Modern Boho.
