HOW DO I DESIGN WITH MULTIPLE PATTERNS?

Getting that “so-pro” design result with multiple patterns can feel impossible to do on your own. We won’t lie, it’s definitely a challenge, but with some help anyone can pull it off.

Here’s a few basic steps to decorate with multiple patterns. In the following are a few directions to get you started mixing those patterns with confidence and style.

START BIG

Pick the statement area in a room first. Traditionally this would be a headboard or a curtain, but we also LOVE a big, bold wallpaper to set the stage. Once you’ve done this it’s a lot easier to match the other elements in the space.

Pro tip: View your choices on a mood board, virtual or IRL before making any commitments. This is a STRONG reco;)

SIMPLIFY

As you layer patterns, mind the size of the elements within them. You’ve chosen your “big impact” element (ie: wallpaper), now look for 2 or 3 patterns with varying size elements that are smaller than your big impact choice.

Pro tip: Keep the shapes interesting - look for linear patterns that arent necessarily lines, circular-type patterns that aren’t circles.

FEEL THE HARMONY

This might sound a little “ woo-woo”, but harmony in design has to be felt. Stand back, regard your design idea on the mood board. How does it feel? If you feel really good about what you’re looking at then it’s time to place your orders:).

If you still aren’t sure about how to, or, if you should move forward - this is when a good designer can help. There’s a lot that goes into the feeling of effortless design. A skilled designer can make all this work beautifully along with all the other elements in your spaces.
